The technology that was developed for Live Mesh will form the basis of the new service, which will provide 2 GB of free storage in the cloud for your most vital files and folders in addition to synchronizing your files (like those in your Documents, Pictures, Music, etc. folders) between PCs...or even your Macs. When you update one file, that change is made available on all your connected computers.

Files uploaded to the cloud are then available on any computer with an internet connection.

Also like Live Mesh, the new service will offer remote desktop management for free from any computer on the web. Once live, you’ll head over to devices.live.com to see a list of all your connected PCs and from there, you can click “connect” to begin remotely controlling them.

Those who were already using Live Mesh will have it removed upon upgrading to the new Windows Live Essentials. Afterwards, you can set up your folders for syncing again via Live Sync.

Live Sync and all the new releases that are a part of the Live Essentials suite will be available soon. In the meantime, you can head to http://www.windowslivepreview.com to learn more about the new programs and services.

<evnet:views>10145</evnet:views><evnet:viewtrackingurl>http://on10.net/70320/WebViewBug.aspx?EVT=0</evnet:viewtrackingurl><evnet:previewtext>
Beta testers of Windows Live Mesh, the synchronization, online storage and remote access service, will soon discover that it’s now merging with the new Windows Live Sync, a part of the updated Windows Live Essentials suite of applications.

Brian Gorbett recently posted about his new Mesh-enabled application that he's now made available – a Windows Live Mesh video player. The video player is based on the Silverlight video player available on Codeplex, with one big difference –it’s been meshified! You can download the source code from Brian’s web site. What’s even better though, is that he has just updated his original post with a link that lets you install the player into your CTP Mesh without having to download the source.

Because the CTP (or developer version) of Mesh is not as widely available as the Beta version, John Mullinax has posted a few screenshots of what adding an app to your Mesh actually looks like.

He also shows how the Mesh Video Player behaves after installation. For example, when you click the “First Mesh Video Player” link, you get information about the app, a filtered news feed about what you’ve done with the app, and a list of the permissions it has.

You can find more sample Mesh applications at www.MicrosoftMeshPack.com.

<evnet:views>14756</evnet:views><evnet:viewtrackingurl>http://on10.net/24993/WebViewBug.aspx?EVT=0</evnet:viewtrackingurl><evnet:previewtext>Brian Gorbett recently posted about his new Mesh-enabled application that he's now made available – a Windows Live Mesh video player. Colaab is an online application that offers businesses real time collaboration tools for their employees. The company is now working on a prototype of their online app which works with Windows Live Mesh. Using the contacts API and accessing content from a user’s Live Folders, the colaab app can run outside the browser after being launched from a desktop shortcut.

And when they say “desktop,” they don’t just mean your computer desktop, but your Windows Live Mesh desktop. That’s because the Colaab mesh app actually installs an icon on the desktop you see when you log in to www.mesh.com.

Once launched, users can access their workspaces, files, and the other online resources found in the application. To see this application in action, check out this video where they demo how they access contacts and folders and more using their mesh-enabled application.

<evnet:views>12734</evnet:views><evnet:viewtrackingurl>http://on10.net/24870/WebViewBug.aspx?EVT=0</evnet:viewtrackingurl><evnet:previewtext>Colaab is an online application that offers businesses real time collaboration tools for their employees. Some of those services will be powered by Live Mesh, a platform that allows for synchronization of data between devices.

Because Live Mesh is open to anyone wanting to use its technology for sharing data, any 3rd party developer can take advantage of the opportunities provided to build their own apps, which is precisely what Blockbuster intends to do.

Blockbuster will use Live Mesh as the basis for their new service, a service where they imagine their users pausing movies on one TV and picking them up at the same place on another, for example.

"Eventually, we'll give customers instant access to any movie on any device with an Internet connection and a screen," Blockbuster CIO Keith Morrow told The Dallas Morning News. "More immediately, we could use this technology to reach into airports. Travelers could quickly download movies from Blockbuster kiosks to their portable media players."

Today, the platform has primarily been used for syncing files and folders between PCs and mobile phones, but the Live Mesh team always promised that file sync was just the tip of the iceberg. Now we can see just how true that is.

<evnet:views>11607</evnet:views><evnet:viewtrackingurl>http://on10.net/24184/WebViewBug.aspx?EVT=0</evnet:viewtrackingurl><evnet:previewtext>
Blockbuster announced today that they are teaming up with Microsoft on a set of new mobile services that will let customers watch movies on any device with an internet connection. With the new Windows Live offering, storage space isn’t isolated within each individual service. Instead, you’ll get 25 GB of free online storage that will span across both Windows Live Photos and Windows Live SkyDrive combined. That space is shared by both services for storing your files and photos in the cloud. The only storage that is separate is that which comes with Windows Live Hotmail. With Hotmail, storage begins at 5 GB when you sign up for a new account and then grows a little each month as you reach the limit. What that means is that, right off the bat, a new user to Windows Live gets 30 total GB of free storage when they sign up.

Now if you combine that storage provided by Windows Live with that of Live Mesh, you can grab 5 more gigs of free online storage. Although there’s no limit to the size of files that can be synced via peer-to-peer between computers and mobile devices, the Live Mesh Desktop – an online access point for getting to your files - only provides 5 GB of online storage (for now, that is).

If you’re going to use both services, you may want to come up with a strategy as to where you’re keeping your data – which service holds what? Given the combined 35 GB between Windows Live and Live Mesh, you can practically use these services as an alternative to backing up your computer – well, almost. They may not be as complete as a true online backup which backs up your computer’s system state data, too, but they can definitely help.

<evnet:views>14819</evnet:views><evnet:viewtrackingurl>http://on10.net/24188/WebViewBug.aspx?EVT=0</evnet:viewtrackingurl><evnet:previewtext>As the new Windows Live prepares to launch, let’s review what’s really being offered here in terms of cloud storage. One of his first applications is “Dr. Popper,” a Live Mesh-enabled Silverlight game which he’s tweaking to store high scores in the Mesh. He said it only took him a couple of hours to build, but it would have taken even less if he had the correct version of Mesh running on his desktop at the time. (He needed the Tech Preview version, not the release version).

In addition, the first Mac and Windows Mobile clients are being released in technical previews (see details below). Current Mesh users will need to update their clients when prompted in order to still participate in Live Mesh. Mac users will need to check Mesh.com for invites. Like the first rollout, there will be a limited number available, so keep your eyes out!

Here’s what’s new in Live Mesh, courtesy of the Live Mesh team blog:

New features:

· New devices supported. We are delighted to release our client software for Mac OS X (10.5.1 or higher) and Windows Mobile (6.0 and 6.1). Because these are both significant new software investments for us, we’re going to only provide them on a limited basis for now (and mobile is restricted to only US or UK to start.) If you get a message saying that we’re at full capacity for these clients, keep an eye on the blog here. We’ll post updates as we increase availability over the coming months.

· To get access to the Mac client, sign in to www.mesh.com, click Add Device, and then click the “Limited Mac Tech Preview now available” link underneath the Install button. If we haven’t exceeded the limit for Mac clients, you’ll get a confirmation dialog, and then Mac will show up under the available list of devices when you choose Add Device from the ring.

· To get access to the Windows Mobile 6.x client, click on one of the following links (US residents, UK residents). Sign in with your LiveID, and you’ll be redirected to the device ring where you’ll see a link to “Use Live Mesh for mobile devices.” Alternately, once you’ve signed in this way, the mobile client should be available for download by pointing your phone’s browser to http://m.mesh.com

· Worldwide availability. We’ve removed the limits on what countries are able to sign up to use Live Mesh. We previously had limitations in place so that we could complete our testing with various language and locale settings, and now that work is indeed complete (with the caveat of course that for now the mobile client, as mentioned above, is not actually available worldwide).

· WAP access. Some of you already discovered that browsing http://m.mesh.com from your WAP-enabled phone gives you a lightweight way to view Mesh content (and, on phones that support it, upload new files.) We’re now making WAP an officially supported feature.

· Folder roles/permissions. Members of a folder can now be assigned one of the following roles to control their access rights: creator, owner, contributor, and reader. Previously, the only permission level (aka “role”) you could set for a member was “owner,” which meant that all members had the same control over the contents of a folder (adding, changing, deleting) as you did. Now, you can assign specific permissions for each member in a Live Mesh folder. Want members to be able to read what’s in a folder, but not change any content? Make them readers. Want them to be able to add to the folder, but not invite other users? Make them contributors.

· Automatic update is now available for the Live Mesh software. This has been a common user request, and we’re taking a first step towards making it possible for your Mesh client software to update itself automatically, without you having to click on any links. In this Beta release, automatic update works like magic if you chose not to install the extra enhancements that required administrator rights. If you did install them, we still have to prompt you to update so that you can click through the UAC elevation prompt and give us permission to update administrative components. We will continue to work on streamlining this process for you in future releases.

· P2P sync can be managed from your computer. When we first enabled P2P sync, you had to go to the Live Desktop to change the sync settings for a folder so that it would no longer synchronize with your Live Desktop and eat up your 5 GB storage limit. We heard from many customers that this was not very intuitive (and we agree: it wasn’t). Now you can change this sync setting from the Live Mesh software on your computer, without having to visit the Live Desktop at all.

· You can drag and drop files to folders on your Live Desktop. One of the most frequently requested features since we opened Live Mesh as a technology preview in April has been the ability to drag and drop files and folders to and from your Live Desktop. We’re extremely happy to be able to say: You can do this now! This makes the Live Desktop experience much more intuitive and even more aligned with Windows. Note that the drag-and-drop feature currently only works with a Windows PC and Internet Explorer 6 or later.

· You can select multiple files for upload or download. In addition to drag-and-drop, you can now use SHIFT and CTRL to select multiple files/folders when uploading them to your Live Desktop.

· Added new synchronization status indicators. If you’ve been using Live Mesh to sync a lot of data, you’ve probably found yourself wondering at some point how far along the synchronization process was. We’ve added an icon to the notification area of the taskbar and a progress bar so that you can tell at a glance how your folder sync is coming.

· “Get started” feature added for new users. Quick tips on how to start using Live Mesh appear on the Live Desktop and when new users install the Live Mesh software. Great for friends and family you invite!

Additional improvements:

· Improved peer-to-peer (P2P) reliability and performance. P2P synchronization is an integral part of how Live Mesh keeps your data current across all your devices. Most of the time, P2P sync happens in the background without you having to worry about it. When Live Mesh tries to update a file on one of your devices, it will leverage whatever connections it can, sometimes pulling from your Live Desktop (the “cloud”), other times pulling from your other devices. You can also choose to have some folders only sync P2P by choosing to never synchronize those folders with your Live Desktop. We have made numerous improvements to P2P sync with this release of Live Mesh. We’re now regularly testing synchronization of folders as large as 60GB, and we’ve also had success synching a single file as large as 20GB.

· Hidden remote screen is now the default for Live Mesh Remote Desktop. We heard feedback from many customers that they’d like to see this feature turned on by default to help ensure the privacy of their remote desktop feature.

· Improved conflict resolution. The user interface (UI) for resolving conflicts has been updated to be easier to use. You’ll also now see the same conflict resolution UI between the Live Mesh software on your device and the Live Desktop on the web. And, when resolving a conflict, you’ll be able to choose keep either version of a file or all versions.

· The Live Mesh bar appears minimized by default, and remembers its previous state. When you create a new Live Mesh folder, the mesh bar (appears when you open a Live Mesh folder) will now appear minimized by default. The mesh bar will also remember the last state it was in (minimized or maximized) for each Live Mesh folder, and show that state the next time you open the folder.

· Better support for large display configurations using Live Mesh Remote Desktop. We’ve added a new “superpan” feature to improve support for large desktop display configurations (e.g., high-resolution displays or multiple monitors).

· Added support for two-factor authentication for Live Mesh Remote Desktop. Enterprise customers can now require two-factor authentication (both domain password and smartcard) for Live Mesh Remote Desktop on networks, or choose to disable the Live Mesh Remote Desktop functionality altogether.

· Install Live Mesh with roaming profiles. The Live Mesh client now supports installing to a user account with roaming profiles. Previously users may have noticed an inability to sync or remotely access devices that use roaming profiles.

Windows Vista User Account Control (UAC) reminder

While we no longer require that UAC be turned on when running Live Mesh on Vista SP1, if you initially installed Live Mesh with UAC turned on, and then turned it off, you might have some issues upgrading. Please see “NOTICE: Updating Live Mesh and User Account Control (UAC)” in the Known Issues sticky on the Live Mesh forums for further information.

<evnet:views>16658</evnet:views><evnet:viewtrackingurl>http://on10.net/23906/WebViewBug.aspx?EVT=0</evnet:viewtrackingurl><evnet:previewtext>The Live Mesh team is rolling out a big update to the service which is going to deliver new features to the PC version of Mesh.
In the meantime, it’s not like you have to do without – the Mobile Mesh web page is available at m.mesh.com from your mobile phone. This is as simple as right-clicking on your Favorites folder and adding it to the Mesh. (Doug has more detailed instructions on this here). When you do this on all your machines, you’ll end up with a merged directory of all your Favorites so you can manage your bookmarks from in one location, no matter how many machines you have. How handy is that? You can even access them from any other computer that has internet access just by logging into your Live Desktop. And don’t forget that Live Mesh lets you invite others to share a folder, so, if you wanted to share your bookmarks, for example, with a team at work so everyone could contribute, you could that, too.

<evnet:views>17336</evnet:views><evnet:viewtrackingurl>http://on10.net/23352/WebViewBug.aspx?EVT=0</evnet:viewtrackingurl><evnet:previewtext>One of the most useful things you can do with Live Mesh, beyond just syncing files and folders, is syncing your bookmarks. First, it opened up its private beta to all of the U.S. (and others who were willing to edit their regional settings), next they released their mobile version, and then the rumors of the Mac version were revealed to be true when LiveSide discovered the Mac client. But today, Mac users don’t have to wait any longer to try Live Mesh - the Mac version has finally been officially released.

According to this page on Microsoft’s Live Mesh site, the Mac version is now ready for download. It reads that with the Live Mesh Mac extender, you can

Add your Mac to your Live Mesh - it will appear with your other devices on www.mesh.com and throughout the Live Mesh UI.

Synchronize files between your Mac, your other computers, and your Live Desktop.

One of the biggest new features is the ability to sync Live Mesh folders peer-to-peer only, excluding your Live Desktop. This means you can sync files across your devices but bypass the Live Mesh cloud storage service where you’re currently limited to only 5 GB of storage space.

This is great news for me because I maxed out my Live Desktop long ago - now at least I’m no longer prevented from Mesh’ing up everything I want – I just won’t be able to access those additional files online from other computers that aren’t my own.

Additionally, the new version of Live Mesh lets you manage file conflicts on the Live Desktop and it adds new “News Events” for when you add or delete folders from Live Mesh. A few more bug fixes and performance improvements round out this release.

Now, I’m off to Mesh up (hmm, that sounds wrong…) every folder I have.

<evnet:views>8422</evnet:views><evnet:viewtrackingurl>http://on10.net/23012/WebViewBug.aspx?EVT=0</evnet:viewtrackingurl><evnet:previewtext>
The next big update for Live Mesh has arrived and with it several new features have been added thanks to popular demand. That’s right – it’s official – the mobile portal is now available at m.mesh.com. From this mobile website, you can access all your meshified folders and files from your browser and read the news feed about the changes that have been made to the various folders. You can even add a new folder from m.mesh.com to your mesh, which can then be used to move your mobile content to – for example, images and videos you took with your mobile phone. There’s also a homepage link that can be used to create a Mobile Pictures folder for you. To see a bunch of screenshots of the mobilized version of Mesh, check out LiveSide, who broke the news (img courtesy of LiveSide)

<evnet:views>8412</evnet:views><evnet:viewtrackingurl>http://on10.net/23040/WebViewBug.aspx?EVT=0</evnet:viewtrackingurl><evnet:previewtext>Yesterday, the Live Mesh team surprised everyone by opening up the service to all and today they’ve gone mobile.
Before we even had an official announcement, LiveSide was reporting last night that folks were able to sign up for Windows Live Mesh if they were located in the U.S. This morning, they confirmed this to be the case. The official announcement was made in the Live Mesh Forum. It read:

Live Mesh is now openly available to anyone in the U.S.

The Live Mesh team is pleased to announce that anyone in the U.S. can now use Live Mesh just by signing in to www.mesh.com with a valid Windows Live ID. No sign up needed to participate!

International Customers

With Live Mesh open to anyone in the US, our international friends can join in the fun early as well - with one caveat: you must be willing to change your Windows operating system region and language setting to EN-US. Once you do this you will be able to immediately sign in to Live Mesh with a valid Windows Live ID. Please be aware that this may cause other applications that specifically require your native country region and language settings to encounter problems.

Feedback

Once you've begun using Live Mesh, we'd love to hear from you! We are working hard to create the best experience and appreciate any feedback you have. Please send us feedback using our online form. You can also submit (and view others') feedback and bugs here on the Microsoft Connect website.

Thank you,
The Live Mesh team

About Live Mesh

If you haven’t checked out Mesh yet, you should. This software+services data synchronization platform isn't built with proprietary code, but rather with open protocols like HTTP, RSS, REST, ATOM and JSON. Although Mesh's FeedSync is somewhat new, it is an XML protocol based on ATOM and RSS.

With Mesh running on your computers, you can simply right-click any folder and choose "Add to Mesh." By doing so, that folder and all the files it contains are synchronized with all of your other computers you've added to your personal Mesh. It also syncs those files to the Live Mesh Desktop, which is Mesh's "cloud" - an online web site you can access from any computer. At the moment, the online storage is limited to 5 GB, but that could change in the future. However, Mesh's recent update allows you to set folders to sync via peer-to-peer, bypassing Live Desktop. When folders are Mesh-enabled, a small panel appears to the right of the folder in explorer which catalogs any changes to the folder (file adds/moves/deletions) as well as notes and comments left by any of the folder's members.

Live Mesh also lets you access all your “meshified” computers remotely, so if you have software that is installed only on one PC, you can use Live Mesh to access that computer as interact with it as if you were sitting in front of it.

Although today’s release doesn’t include a Mac version, we know that it’s under development and should be available soon.

<evnet:views>7950</evnet:views><evnet:viewtrackingurl>http://on10.net/23031/WebViewBug.aspx?EVT=0</evnet:viewtrackingurl><evnet:previewtext>
Before we even had an official announcement, LiveSide was reporting last night that folks were able to sign up for Windows Live Mesh if they were located in the U.S. This morning, they confirmed this to be the case. I just downloaded and installed a small software app that runs in my system tray and then, on www.mesh.com, I added the computer I was using to Mesh.

On each PC, I picked a few folders (Documents, Downloads, and Pictures) and right-clicked on them, choosing "Add Folder to Your Live Mesh." It was that easy, I swear.

What's really cool about Mesh is that I could finally sync up my documents, photos, etc. from all my PCs to essentially merge together and become one, big, "meshed" folder. It didn't get all confused that I was syncing up a folder called Documents to another folder called Documents. It just knew what I wanted to do. After syncing, I was surprised at how much duplicate content I had, probably from having to move files to and from PCs the old fashioned way - email, USB drives, via the network, etc.

When conflicts arose, I had the option of viewing both files and choosing which one to keep. But what was really great is that the conflicts weren't displayed as annoying pop-up messages while in the middle of syncing, thank goodness - they were just items in a list that I could review at my leisure.

I'd like the option to keep both copies of some files, but, at the moment, you have to pick one to keep or just leave the conflict be. The only problem with this is that Windows Live Messenger chat logs for the same contact had the same name on different machines and I wanted to keep both logs. Other than that, I could rename documents and photos to resolve the duplicately named, but different, files, but I'm still hoping for a "keep both files" button in a future release.

When viewing a Mesh-enabled folder, a pop-up window appears next to the Windows Explorer window, showing the history of your interactions with the folder (Sarah added this, Sarah deleted that), conflicts, members, and synchronized devices.

Although Mesh is going to do much more than just this syncing in the future, for now, it's providing a great way to keep my files in sync as I move from computer to computer.

I also discovered that I could invite some friends to Mesh by sharing a folder with them, something that could be done from either a PC or my Live Mesh online desktop. If you have Live Mesh and haven't shared your invites, please do so! I know some people who are *dying* for them.

If you want to learn more about Mesh and its future, I found the article and interview by Steve Gillmor, speaking with Microsoft Mesh lead David Treadwell (who should really start blogging again) absolutely fascinating. Be warned though, this isn't the kind of article you should skim quickly. Save it for when you have some time to grab a cup of coffee, sit down, read, re-read, and really take it all in. It's worth it, I promise. If that sounds like something you would like to do in that alternative universe where you can actually sit down and read things, well then, just go get the podcast and listen to it on your commute instead.

<evnet:views>7349</evnet:views><evnet:viewtrackingurl>http://on10.net/22156/WebViewBug.aspx?EVT=0</evnet:viewtrackingurl><evnet:previewtext>
Since I got invited to Live Mesh earlier this week, I've been playing around with the settings, adding devices, and sharing folders.
